The Passionate Friends is the first of three films that director David Lean made with Ann Todd in and she gives a fine performance in this mannered British melodrama that evokes in ways two other popular British films of the era, Lean's Brief Encounter and the Todd starring The Seventh Veil.
The Passionate Friends looks gorgeous and has a feverishly modern intensity.

The scenery and techniques were lovely but it wasn't until the last 40 minutes or so till I was really drawn in. This film is one of the highest peaks of David Lean's achievement as a director, and possibly it owes something to the fact that he married its star Ann Todd in the same year, which may have helped him elicit her supernaturally radiant performance.
