Although it contains some gross-out moments (which are always welcome), it's a surprisingly well-crafted exercise in toying with the power of the unknown to generate chills, further proving that sometimes in the world of horror, the idea of 'less is more' can often prevail.2020 has been giving us some Lovecraftian goodness lately and one of the movies i was most looking forward to was The Beach House, it’s directed well enough and the photography is gorgeous, this shows much more restraint that Color Out of Space (it’s Lovecraftian relative that released earlier this year), and relies a lot more heavily on building an atmosphere and not showing too much, just enough to make your creepy engines going until it really wants to reveal what it wants to reveal, and even then, it’s still pretty vague and ambiguous with it’s answers and pretty conservative with how much it’s gonna show these “creatures”, if we can call them that.
