Juba came from dances in Africa (where it was called Giouba) and Haiti (known as Djouba). It pre-dates ragtime, jazz, blues, hokum, jugband, hillbilly, country, and in fact most of what we term today as “American Folk Music.” It is from the time we call the Antebellum (before the Civil War, from about 1750 to 1850). The music was performed in a circular formation customarily with variations on the basic rhythm, in the form of syncopation and shifting accented notes.
