Mathias Gold (Kline) has inherited a house and garden from his late father, in the fashionable Marais district of Paris. It is very 'wordy', and I missed so much. IMDb should urgently consider changing this silly rule. The plot is unusual to a point and interesting. Was this review helpful?

My problem is that this release lacks any sort of subtitle for the hearing impaired and in fact lacks any kind of subtitle although on the back cover it mentions "english and french with english subtitles". "Blue Jasmine" worked this to the nth degree, but "My Old Lady" isn't nearly so grim, and Paris gets much better treatment than San Francisco did. By about a third of the way through the lack of clear genre slowly became lack of clear direction, and motivations of characters (and plot) became implausible and unbelievable. tries to convince his 74-year-old patient, Mrs. Tanner (Kathryn Joosten), to start dialysis in order to prolong her life. Not sure I fully understand it, but it seems a good way to ensure older folks can spend their days in their own homes. 19 out of 26 found this helpful. It is real. You won't leave saying, "Oh, I have to visit the romantic city of Paris." I'd better not stay for another drink, or my old lady will start to wonder where I am!
Kevin Kline is without any doubt the best American actor on the circuit and he was perfect for the part. His father had actually bought the place as a viager. I tend to go for films that have low scores based on the premise that high scoring movies on netflix are usually utter drivel ( who grades them!) One's wife or female romantic partner. It is not a comedy anymore than Macbeth is a comedy. The lies are not your truth. Enjoyed this film but a bit slow in places. The unfurling of the story of lots of adultery and betrayal is interesting, just not well told.

In fact, it only becomes truly compelling in its second half, as Horovitz drives toward darker material and farther away from the light. They have no happy memories and are likely to have trouble maintaining relationships. It was then seen off-Broadway in 2002 starring Sian Philips and Jan Maxwell. They really should have listened harder.

Ironically, the trauma is compounded by the fact that narcissists absolutely believe themselves to be the best and most loving parents any child could have, giving themselves God-like status, who can do no wrong in their own minds. I felt like I was eavesdropping, like I was lurking and seeing and hearing what was not for me to know just as Mathias and Chloé lived under the burden of their parents' lies, and through no fault and no choice of their own, had become a very part of the front designed to disguise the lies for an entire lifetime. One of those films that gets to the end and you say 'what? And the fact that it is filmed in Paris is just a wonderful bonus. Overall, it just fell flat. I went to see this film at BUFS this past week (Brock University Film Series) in Niagara, Canada. Gentle entertainment for a relaxing evening at home. Forced to watch, I discovered a genre I didn't know of. Instant gratification is something that many parents will steer their children away from after the age of 2 or 3-years-old in favor of more thoughtful, considerate, long-term rewards.
Was this review helpful? A child who has been emotionally neglected often grows up with a personality disorder. The main characters are flawless and there are some auxiliary ones that are also quite memorable. Stéphane Freiss always seems to play a neurotic Frenchman, but he does frenzied well. They seem to have their motivations yanked about willy- nilly with no regard for what happened just a few scenes before.
Finally Kristin Scott-Thomas was just excellent as she always is.
Kevin Kline, Maggie Smith and Kristin Scott Thomas star in this witty and heartfelt drama about surprising inheritances and unexpected connections. Simplicity is something we rarely see these days yet it is something we crave in these very complex times. Instead, they become useful tools, and they're "lucky" if they also become attractive possessions to their parents. Was this review helpful?
