In 1942, the British Government commissioned Lord Brabazon, the first Briton to fly in 1908, to chair a committee to recommend post-war aircraft designs. Although the engines’ direction was to be reversed to a tractor configuration on the airliner, the idea of using coupled engines to drive contrarotating props was retained.Bristol was contracted to build two prototypes of what it called the Type 167, with an option for 10 production models. Despite this, BEA had expressed interest in acquiring the flying prototype for commercial use but sadly it was never granted a full airworthiness certificate.A Brabazon I Mk II variant was schemed around four double Proteus engines and although construction began, this aircraft was never completed for flight.By 1952, expenditure was estimated to be around £3.4 million and yet there were still no signs that the market predicted by the Brabazon report would materialise. Drawings of the proposed bomber indicate it would have looked a bit like the Convair B-36, with sharply swept wings that incorporated buried engines driving pusher propellers. One lasting legacy of the huge dimensions is the 7½ acre Brabazon Assembly Hall, still in use at Filton and 1,052 ft long, 410 ft maximum width, and 117 ft high!Work on strengthening and extending the runway to a length of 2,750 yards to meet the needs of the mighty Brabazon began in March 1946 although one regrettable effect was the total destruction of the village of Charlton, which lay to the west of Filton, directly in line with the runway. The sole prototype (G-AGPW) was flown for the first time by A.J. Although the most conspicuous aircraft derived from the Brabazon Committee had proved to be misconceived, not all its recommendations turned out badly. Le Bristol Type 167 Brabazon était un long-courrier à hélices conçu par Bristol Aeroplane Company pour les vols transatlantiques reliant le Royaume-Uni et les États-Unis.

Passenger accommodations within its fuselage were laid out on a scale far beyond even what we think of today as “first class.” Passengers were seated in private cabins that could be converted into sleeping berths. Simply being able to fly across the ocean was no longer sufficient; airliners now had to be able to accomplish that feat while carrying enough passengers to earn a profit. The second prototype, fitted with the turboprop engines that were expected to boost its performance by 50 mph, was never completed. While many in Britain considered the money spent on the Brabazon wasted, the effort Bristol expended on it was not. As completed, the Brabazon would have featured a complete flying crew of six for its 100 passengers. The committee’s work led to the development of several successful transports, including the de Havilland Dove, the Vickers Viscount and the first production jet airliner, the de Havilland Comet. As for the Brabazon itself, many historians still insist its main problem was not that it was a white elephant but that, as the predecessor of the modern jumbo jet, it was simply 20 years ahead of its time.Lydia Kamakaeha Liliuokalani, last sovereign before annexation of Hawaii by the United States.Frederick Soddy, named an isotope and received 1921 Nobel prize for chemistry.Adolph Rupp, basketball coach at the University of Kentucky who achieved a record 876 victories.Dan White, politician; assassinated San Francisco mayor George Moscone and San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk.Terry Bradshaw, athlete, TV sports analyst, actor; first quarterback to win four Super Bowls (Pittsburgh Steelers); Pro Football Hall of Fame.Christa McAuliffe, the first civilian passenger on a space mission.

By 1953 the costs had escalated even further to £6 million and with another £2 million needed to complete the MkII prototype, the Ministry of Supply announced the cancellation of the project. All of the flight controls were hydraulically powered. It returned to Farnborough in 1950 after visiting Heathrow Airport for a succession of take-offs and landings. It was finally grounded in 1952 and eventually scrapped. The second prototype was to be fitted with eight newly developed Bristol Proteus turboprops, in coupled pairs similar to the first prototype’s arrangement. One direct beneficiary of the work instigated by the Brabazon was the production facilities for the Bristol Britannia.Later developments have also fully justified the development of very large commercial aircraft for long range passenger flight, albeit with considerably more passengers and less space than was offered by the Brabazon. Although the Brabazon couldn’t do that, the Americans had developed several air liners that could, including the Douglas DC-6, The Brabazon performed many additional test and demonstration flights during the next 2½ years, but attracted no interest from the airlines. The prototype was broken up in October 1953 after only 400 hours flying, in part due to an inadequate projected fatigue life. “Bill” Pegg was heard to exclaim, “Good God, it works!”The Brabazon had a top speed of 300 mph, but at its cruising speed of 250 mph it could fly 5,500 miles. Each Bristol Centaurus engine was coupled to a propeller Gearbox at a 32-degree angle. A Brabazon I Mk II variant was schemed around four double Proteus engines and although construction began, this aircraft was never completed for flight. Bristol’s bomber design seemed a natural starting place from which to begin developing the airliner. Moore-Brabazon, 1st Baron Brabazon of Tara, the so-called Brabazon Committee came up with a series of recommendations for five different categories of airliners. The Brabazon’s design grew out of the prewar conception of air travel as a luxury reserved for the wealthy. Despite the Brabazon being often thought of as a 'White Elephant', much of the expenditure was on the creation of an infrastructure to build and support large aircraft production after the war.
